Much Wenlock, a Shropshire town not too far from Curteis Limited, as the actual birthplace of the modern Olympics, as we know it today. One of the Official Mascots for the 2012 Olympics is named "Wenlock".
The story behind Wenlock is that in 1850 a local doctor by the name of William Penny-Brookes, introduced sports activities to British primary schools. Doctor Penny-Brookes had a vision for the Olympic Games and is hailed as one of the modern sports greatest achievements. When Baron de Coulbertin visited Much Wenlock to view the Games, it was he who was inspired to create the global event. The first Olympic Games took place in Athens in 1896. Unfortunately Doctor Penny-Brookes passed away, just four months prior to the Olympic Games starting.
Much Wenlock continues to host their own Olympic Games and this year celebrates their 120th Wenlock Olympics, taking place on 7th-10th July, including events such as archery, bowls, clay pigeon shooting, fencing, golf and a 7 mile road race!
