History

The Curteis Story

Its story began at Plas Yolyn, a mansion house set within a working farm in rural Shropshire. The Yolyn family is first recorded as living there in the 11th century.

Generations later, the estate was inherited by Roger Curteis, who farmed the land for more than 20 years before deciding to pursue a different path.

Roger’s son, Henry, had begun supplying jewellery to retailers, and Roger wondered whether he could manufacture pieces for the trade himself. By chance, he came across a photograph of a chain-making machine. Intrigued by the idea, he decided to invest the proceeds from the sale of his livestock and purchased his first machine.

In 1975, Roger installed the machine in the attic at Plas Yolyn and began applying his engineering skills to jewellery manufacturing.

From Hobby to Business

What began as a hobby quickly became a business. Demand for Curteis jewellery grew rapidly, particularly after Henry returned from London to join the company full-time.

Before long, more than twenty machines were operating throughout the house. By 1990, Curteis had achieved a turnover of £2.5 million and required larger premises to support its continued growth.

During the recession of the early 1990s, Curteis expanded its manufacturing capabilities by acquiring machinery from jewellery businesses in both the UK and the United States.

By 2000, the company had become a recognised leader in British jewellery manufacturing, operating from 40,000 square feet of dedicated factory space.

Curteis was named UK Jewellery Manufacturer of the Year in both 1995 and 2022 and has been a regular finalist throughout the years.

The proud tradition continues...

From modest beginnings, Curteis built its reputation on quality, reliability and service. Today, the company continues to combine competitive pricing, innovative design and long-standing customer relationships with a commitment to British manufacturing.

More than 50 years after its founding, Curteis remains a family-owned business dedicated to supporting the jewellery trade. While the company has grown significantly, quality, craftsmanship and customer service remain at the heart of everything it does.

The full story can be read in Henry’s autobiography, Angels & Devils: My Extraordinary Life, published by Shrewsbury Publications and available from the company or through Amazon as an e-book.
